Hi everyone, this is Team Birch. The topic of our group is about Chinese students’ hair loss after coming to the UK. We chose this proposition because many Chinese students around us came to the UK, and because of water quality, irregular schedules and other reasons, the problem with hair loss is more serious than ever, and the number of bald people in the UK ranks fifth in the world, with 39.23% of people having hair loss. That is the reason why we select this proposition.
Methods & Data sources
Our research methods include data scraping, data analysis, questionnaires and interviews. The data sources are divided into three parts, one is Google and Chinese search engine Baidu, the other is interviews and surveys, and the third is social software Instagram and microblog Weibo.
Data Visualization
Female VS Male
1.Statistically, female are slightly more concerned about hair loss than male, but there was no significant difference.

2. When it comes to the reason for caring about it, the element of “gender” still doesn’t influence their opinion fundamentally.

3. When we looked at what was being done to prevent hair loss, we found that women were more likely to spend time trying to solve problems in multiple ways, Men, on the other hand, don’t want to go to great lengths to figure out how to deal with their hair loss, even though they know they have this problem.

MA VS MSC
1.Concern for hair loss

Mostly choose
MSC students: “very care”(42.4%) MA students: “a little care”(37.0%)
2.Reason for concern hair loss

Msc : “I have this problem”(57.6%) > “Affected by others”(36.4%)
MA : “Affected by others”(46.3%) > “I have this problem”(42.6%)
3. “ I’m worried but I did nothing” : MA(15.7%) > Msc(3.1%)
“Hair care products” : Msc (87.5%) > MA (66.7%)

Continued normal concerns
We use Chinese keywords to search on Google. This is the trend of the topic’s popularity over time. From the chart, we can see that the attention in the past year has remained stable at around 80.

Problems:
In social media, we want to get data from Weibo and Ins.

If we use hair loss as a search keyword in Weibo, We selected 100 Weibo with regional settings in the UK as samples for analysis. It can be seen from the chart that the proportion of personal creation (some people comment on hair loss) is the largest, but we couldn’t distinguish how many people in the sample are Chinese international students and how many are Chinese settled in the UK.

We found that in the discussion of ins posts about hair loss, there are many advertisements, we also meet difficulties in the data collection of Ins because some is invalid, this is what we need to improve.
Reflection:
1.Before the investigation, we thought that hair loss is not only an experience that Chinese people care about, but foreigners would also care about hair loss. Through investigation, we believe that this experience can indeed be shared.
2.We have male members and female members, so we feel that gender differences may be reflected in the experience of caring about hair loss, and we have investigated. But the result shows not significantly different.
3.As Chinese students, we collected too few samples and the scale was not comprehensive enough. There are more Chinese and fewer foreigners in the questionnaire sample.
4.We do not collect data on age. When designing the questionnaire, we did not consider that there will be people of different ages in the postgraduate students, such as those with work experience, and the age factor may be one of the key factors in the research question.
